Gold Canyon is a part of the Apache Junction Unified School District which is comprised of Peralta Trail Elementary and Gold Canyon Elementary; Desert Shadows Middle School; and Apache Junction High School. A number of universities are located nearby and are ready to serve the higher learning needs of students. These include Phoenix College, a two year community college; Grand Canyon University, which is known as ‘Arizona’s Private University’; and of course, Arizona State University.

Attractions

Gold Canyon has an abundance of attractions to visit and things to do. One of the most popular areas of interest includes the Dolly Steamboat, a sightseeing sternwheeler ship that doubles as a lunch/dinner cruise. This impressive vessel cruises the stunning Canyon Lake located only a short distance away from Gold Canyon. During the tour, passengers can expect to see unusual desert wildlife such as mule deer and bald eagles, rare desert fauna, and breathtaking canyon walls. The tours are offered year round, and on certain times of the year, astronomy cruises are offered.

Goldfield Ghost Town is a great stop for history lovers around the world. What was once a booming community in the late 1890s, the town began to dwindle by the 1920s, and eventually became the ghost town it is today. Goldfield Ghost Town serves as a popular tourist destination. Visitors are encouraged to explore Historic Main Street which features numerous shops and historical buildings. Afterwards they can take a stop at the Mammoth Gold Mine and attempt to pan for gold while learning about the challenges that faced the gold miners who once worked there. An Old Western gun fight is performed every weekend by the famous Goldfield Gunfighters!

Finally, the infamous Apache Trail is a must see for any visitor. This historic tour road, also known as State Route 88, begins just east of Gold Canyon and winds its way through the volcanic rock fields of the Superstition Mountains. The road follows along the Salt River with hair pin turns and zigzag roads set off against the stunning canyons and cliffs that surround it. Stops along the trail include Goldfield Ghost Town, Canyon Lake, Tortilla Flat (another Ghost Town) and Apache Lake.

Parks and Recreation

Gold Canyon Golf Resort is a phenomenal Golf and Leisure Resort and is the most popular attraction in Gold Canyon. The resort features two courses: Dinosaur Mountain and Sidewinder. Dinosaur Mountain is the number one rated golf course in all of Arizona. Its unique design provides for hours of fun, and the #4 and #5 holes are noted as the best holes. Sidewinder curves around the base of Dinosaur Mountain and features dozens of challenging twists and turns. The two courses are both noted for their gorgeous desert scenery that provides unique challenges to the game. In addition, the resort has a pro golf shop, tournaments and a golf school.

The Resort is also home to a number of casitas/villas that are available for one to stay in while in Gold Canyon. Some of the casitas come complete with spas and/or patios while others are deluxe suites!

In addition to golf courses, Gold Canyon is home to a number of state parks and lakes. Lost Dutchman State Park is a beautiful nature preserve. The park features multiple hiking paths and trails that lead from the park into the Superstition Wilderness. The park is truly stunning in the spring when dozens of wildflowers blossom. This is often recommended as the best time to camp in the park and enjoy the native wildlife that roam it, such as coyote, javelina and jack rabbits. The park is located near the Superstition Mountain Wilderness Hiking area which is home to hundreds of miles of pristine wilderness. Some of the most popular trails include the Hieroglyphic Trail and the Lost Goldmine trial.

For those who are looking to take part in some water recreation, Apache Lake Marina and Resort is an ideal spot. The lake is 17 miles long and is a phenomenal spot for boating, fishing, water skiing, hiking and camping. Desert wildlife can be found roaming the painted walls as large mouth bass glisten in the stunning lake. The Lake is home to a charming motel as well as the lovely Apache Lake Restaurant and Bar.
